“Some children know how to speak to you through words, some through gestures or facial expressions, and some simply through a look. Michael, however, has learned how to speak to us in his own incredible way. Michael may be “non-verbal” in many medical charts, but those of us who know him, know him as a total communicator. Michael has truly been blessed by the gift of music offered to him by Heartsong.”
- Elizabeth Seabury, speech therapist
Non-verbal and without the social skills needed to communicate, Mikey’s health presented some serious challenges; his diagnoses of autism, mental retardation, small brain syndrome, gait disorder, seizure disorder, and a sleep disorder presented a myriad of hurdles for his communication with the world.
When I first met him at age eight, he could not speak. Staring at a wall, he would rock back and forth, his personality and presence hidden inside of him. He was a broken child. Mikey had endured a very rough early childhood, suffered brain injury, and experienced seizures frequently.
Today, when you meet Mikey, you would never believe this! You would never believe it as you see the look on his face when he listens to his favorite song or watches a motorcycle drive by. It becomes immediately clear to you that there is just something about him. His zest for life simply envelops you!
Heartsong was instrumental in this achievement. And it is Mikey’s desire to leave his mark by reaching others who also will benefit from the services we provide. Heartsong therapists work with more than 300 children each year in our art, dance/movement, drama, and music therapies. Since our founding in 1992, we have helped more than 4,000 children. Heartsong’s creative arts therapies meet the complex needs of our children and have been the impetus of significant change in their physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being.
Your support of the Mikey Mo Gives Back Scholarship Fund will allow other children to participate in these transformative programs and impact the lives of children just like Mikey. It will allow his legacy to live on and reach so many more families who are in need of our crucial therapies.
$300 provides one month of therapy sessions for a child. Will you join Mikey today and help spread the impact of Heartsong?
